Flower of Steele

A chance meeting

Life in curious times

Episodes of bliss

Broken by dreams of forever

Cries and curses to the stars

Intervals of silence

Friend of brave and fortune

Courageous and daunting

A proud gazelle she stands

Bohemian of wanting

Isles of tranquility beckon

She longs for the start

Hearts mend on a shelf

In repair for eternity

The journey to Elysium

For past battles with Cupid

She stands on the corner

Confronted by gales of uncertainty

The storm before the calm

Awaiting winds of destiny;

A princess of black beauty

Powerless, yet enchanting

She lifts her head to the East

The love she gives returns.

Note: During my senior year of college, I was in a relationship with this guy. He was a grad student at Howard, and a pretty good writer. All things considered, I admired so many things about him. And I still do. During one of our “break up” periods, he wrote me this poem. We didn’t immediately get back together, but the poem touched me in a special way. It still does. I hope he’s somewhere living/loving well. Like he deserves. Like we all deserve. {My last name is Steele} <3
